Top Producing Mindset: Part 5 of 5 in a Series

Mindset 5 (1)

Core Values

I have three daughters and it’s very important to me that I’m open and aware in how to raise my children. I’m clear that I don’t know what I need to know to properly raise my girls to the level that I want.  It’s important that I’m always learning from people that have raised children and girls. I go to seminars on how to raise kids with my wife and I read books on how to raise kids.  I do these things because I know I don’t know. I’ve never done this!  And, I’ve got to learn. I’ve got to know because I don’t want to not know.

I have one model, for example, that I have from somebody who has amazing children; they help me become a better parent.  One of the things that they asked me is, “What are your family core values?”  That’s a great question.  I help people in business all the time and one of the first things I do is ask them what are your core values. Why are those important? Because we’ve got to know who we are and who we aren’t. I didn’t have that for my family and I saw what a blind spot that is.  I have core values for my business but not for my family.  When I realized this, I came home with a flip chart and gathered the family and said, “We’re going to set our core values!” We all wrote down what we wanted and who we are and who we aren’t.  This is my core value list for that we came to as a family.  I had a sticker made and I had it put in the stairwell of my house.  It’s there, why?  Because I want my children to have a model to follow and to me this is the model to follow.  If they ever get stuck, they can always go back to the model.

What’s the model? Our core values. Feel free to use these when building yours:

– Love and serve the Lord

– Have fun and enjoy life daily

– Celebrate each other’s wins

– Live and act with integrity

– Love and serve others

– Work hard to reach your goal

– Always have a positive attitude

– Look for the best in other people

– Honor each other’s gifts and talents

– Live life with a thankful heart

As I started this process, I was like, “This is a good model.  I’m going to train my kids to think like this every day.”  And, it’s impacted my family in the best ways since.  I even took it a step further: I was talking with my mentor and he said, “What about goals? You set goals for your business, do you set goals with your family?”  I said, “Good question, why don’t I do that?!”  Boom!  I created a goal board for my family.  Each of us has different goals on the board.  My youngest daughter, Ivy, was 2 or 3 at the time, and on her part of the board it said, “Get potty-trained.”

How often do you meet a two-year old with goals?  I’m teaching my kids how to set goals and have core values.  Why?  Because they’re models for life. Just like we need models in business, we need models in every area of life.  We’ve got to have that.  It’s up to you to do this part and it’s up to you to take massive action.  You can have a model to follow but it’s’ up to you to do the work.  That’s where it comes down to the personal power of what you can control, which is your actions.  One of the things that I love is the mindset of champions, like Mr. Roger Staubach.  Roger Staubach is obviously one of the greatest legendary quarterbacks there is.  He’s an incredible athlete.  Quick story, at our club, in the locker room, I have Roger Staubachs’ old locker.  It’s pretty cool.  Every day when I see that locker I’m thinking, “Leader baby! Mindset like Roger Staubach!” It inspires me, but again, I know I still have to put in the work.

Let’s break down balance.  This is something that’s really important.  We all work so hard.  We’ve got to be fulfilled. Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.  I want you to establish these ground rules for how you can become more balanced.  Here are my big three:

– Yearly Goal Retreat – Every year ol’Hossy sneaks away for a week by myself and I plan my future and assess where I am.  I’ve been doing this for the past 15 years.  It’s really, very special to me and I love doing it.

– I pre-plan all of my vacations.  I just got back from Costa Rica; spent four days in the jungle with my wife for our anniversary.  That was done by design; it was planned; I was looking forward to that trip; I was working toward that trip.  Always have those vacations planned because you’ve got to get away from your business but you’ve also got to be working towards your vacations.

– Weekly Date Night – If you’re married or in a relationship, you need a weekly date night.  Friday night is weekly date night for me.  It’s something that I’ve always done; it’s always been something that has helped me be more balanced.  I take my wife with me on as many trips as I possibly can for balance.

This helps me get balanced.  For me, in my work life, I work and I charge hard and I expect results in the time I devote to working.  It’s important to recharge those batteries and to be able to do that I get charged by surrounding myself with those I love most.  We’ve got to be able to do that and make room for that; make it a priority.

Understand that discipline is the gatekeeper of success.  You can know all these things but it comes down to implementing.  You will either suffer the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.

– Be disciplined in your growth

– Be disciplined in your actions

– Be disciplined in your attitude

– Be disciplined in your learning

– Be disciplined in your commitment

Don’t let the lack of discipline be the reason you don’t get to where you’re going.  Make the decision to be disciplined.

Some of you think, “Great, but how do I become a super hero, me 2.0, the best me that I can be?” I’ll share a secret: create an alter-ego, that’s how you become a different version of you.  For me, I’ve got my alter ego, Boss Hoss.  When Boss Hoss is around, he’s in charge.  When I go on a listing appointment, Boss Hoss is there.  When I set foot on stage Boss Hoss, is there.  When I start a coaching call, Boss Hoss is there.  Here’s what I want you to do.

I want you to start by making a MOLO sheet.  A MOLO sheet is everything that you need to become More Of and everything that you need to become Less Of.  I did this.  I wrote down that I need to become less fearful, negative, uncertain, content, doubtful, anxious, stressed, caring what people think of me.  I need to become more fearless, positive, confident, enthusiastic, bold, consistent, have more authority and higher standards, more of that Make it happen! Get out of my way!

Here’s how an alter-ego works.  Take a look at Clark Kent. Who is he?  Well, he’s Superman.  What is Superman? It’s his alter-ego.  He steps into the phone booth and comes out as Superman.

What about Marshall Mathers; do you know who he is?  Eminem.  He’s a performer, when he steps on stage he’s a different person.  If you listen to interviews he has multiple facets to his personality.  He says, when I’m on stage I become Eminem.  Beyoncé is the same way.  She’s one of the best live performers there is.  She’s shy, she’s timid, she doesn’t really feel comfortable getting on stage, but she has an alter-ego, Sasha Fierce, that she becomes.  She steps into her alter-ego to deliver the performance.  Who is your alter ego?  Christina Aguilera is one of the best performers, musicians hands down. But, it’s not Christina on stage.  Her alter ego is Xtina.  She even has it tattooed on her neck.  If you listen to her she says Xtina is my alter-ego, “When I perform, I step into Xtina, I leave Christina behind backstage.”

Who is your alter-ego?  Who is it you become?  What’s the better version of you in you?  Put a name to it and every time fear creeps in you need to name that person too.  Who is the person who tries to hold the alter-ego back; battle of constant positive negative thought.  Who are these two people in your mindset that are the two versions of you?  This is one of the best most impactful things that you can do in helping you have an unbelievable bullet-proof mindset.  Over the years, I’ve taught a lot of people this.  I’ve heard so many different names and strategies for how people use their alter-ego.  It’s one of the most powerful things I’ve seen is how people can turn it around, think different, challenge the way they’re thinking; creating an alter-ego allows you to do that.

Actions to Take

Here’s what I challenge you to do as I leave you with some action steps, be all in!  Make your success your number 1 priority; be all in.  Don’t be one foot in and one foot out because fortune doesn’t favor that person.  Fortune favors the bold, the jumper, the action taker, the person who is all in.

I want you to create your MOLO sheet.  Write down everything that that you need to become more of and then on the other side of the sheet write down everything you need to become less of.  Look at that list and keep that in front of you all the time; reminding your consciousness of what you need to be doing and who you need to become.

Next is create your alter ego. Put a name to your alter ego.  Who is this person?  They are the person on the more of side.  The more of side is where the alter ego is.  The less of side is the alter ego’s enemy.

Create a goal sheet and write down one goal in each of the 8 areas of your life and one action that you’re going to take to achieve that goal.  Do this today.  Keep this in front of you.

Self-assess where you need to be.  Self-assess your beliefs.  We talked about how the beliefs that form your story, your environment, shape what you’re telling yourself about your results.  What do you need to do to change your beliefs to help you become the person you need to be? What beliefs have been holding you back? What story have you been telling yourself and are there any blind spots in that story?

Last, I want you to write your “I am” statements.  Who are you and who are you not?  Write down what you are.  Get your affirmations together of who you are and remind yourself on a daily basis.

If you do all these things that we’ve covered in this series, if we do these things and work on them every day we will become that person we’ve got to become.  The hounds of hell won’t keep us from getting to where we’re going to go; we’ll move mountains to get to where we want to go.  We’ll move left, right, over and under, but nothing is going to stop us from getting to the next level, and the next version of us and where we’re destined to be.

Go out there and take big action, make big things happen and always have a bullet-proof winning mindset!
